Nice’s Cityzi: completion of the first development stage of contactless payment in France

par Elsa Sidawy | 12.17.10

Last May, Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, inaugurated the implementation of a contactless payment device throughout the city’s transport and shops, using a telephone fitted with a NFC chip. Six months after the launching of this experimentation, the AFSCM (Association Française du Sans Contact Mobile: French association for contactless mobile devices) made a first positive and encouraging assessment, insomuch the system would be ready to be used nationwide. Cityzi is the name of this new telephone developed by Samsung. It keeps the basic attributes of any mobile phone while opening the possibility of paying both for purchases without a bankcard and for public transport by downloading the appropriate application or holding the telephone over contactless terminals. To this day, 2,500 inhabitants of Nice have bought a Cityzi. Is it enough to speak of success?
